Female or male, teenagers or adults, everyone is susceptible to acne attacks. From hormonal fluctuations to stress, the reasons for acne onslaughts can be varied and multiple. Besides practising good cleansing habits and clocking sufficient sleep, did you know that you can eat particular foods to reduce such attacks? Here are some inexpensive (and more importantly, easy-to-get, because where does one find kale and quinoa in Singapore?) foods, long lauded for their skin-clearing benefits, which you can supplement to your diet to attain radiant and clear skin.
#1. Salmon
An oily fish, salmon contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Excessive sebum production by the skin can lead to clogged pores, an oxygen-deprived environment where bacteria can thrive. As a result of trying to fight the bacteria, your skin can get inflamed, causing acne growth. Salmon and other fish rich in fatty acids, such as mackerel and tuna, can help to reduce inflammation.
#2. Garlic
Garlic contains a naturally occurring chemical called allicin, which, when digested, acts as a great anti-oxidant and dispels toxins from your system. Eat it raw, for instance sprinkled over your salads, to ensure optimal benefits.
#3. Nuts & Seeds
Almonds, flaxseeds, hazelnuts are all good sources of omega-3 and omega 6 fatty acids, vitamin E and zinc, which can help to reduce redness and irritation. In particular, pumpkin seeds help to heal blemished skin and maintain skin renewal. Definitely avoid the flavoured ones, like salted or caramelised snack packs!
#4. Berries
Berries, all kinds of berries, such as blueberries, cranberries, strawberries and raspberries are packed with anti-oxidants like Vitamin C and anthocyanin that hydrate the skin and help to prevent premature ageing and skin damage.
#5. Water
Water isn’t technically a food, but it should be in your diet to help you attain glowing skin! The cheapest way to keep your skin supple, flush out toxins by drinking plenty of water. Drinking sufficient water also helps to replenish skin tissue and heal blemished skin.
